FRI 24th JUNE

We left really early - 6am flight - and flew into Santa Ana airport just south of Los Angeles.  It was an hour and a half drive down to San Diego.

Santa Ana airport is also known as John Wayne airport.

Fergus just needs a hat to complete the Duke look.

Some 'Hot Stuff' in California.
We visited Whaley House in Old Town San Diego - but we didn't see any ghosts, so I was a little disappointed(/relieved).  I mean, it's America's most haunted house - and none of them cared to show themselves that day!  Aren't we interesting enough people?

This part of the house was originally a courtroom - and there was even a hanging here - of Yankie Jim Robinson (it's as well his first name was Yankie or I'd have mistaken him for that guy from Neighbours).  It didn't put the Whaley's off buying the place - though they may have had second thoughts when the footsteps were heard and their friends wouldn't visit anymore...

We saw the chapel of the Immaculate Conception.  An old adobe chapel built in 1850.
And we had a quick look around the Heritage County Park - about ten beautifully preserved old properties set on an acre of land.  They looked very pretty, but we could only get into the ground floor, and that's not enough poking around enough for my liking.
The Spanish first came here (San Diego) in 1542, started to settle here in 1769, and Mexican independence was won in 1820.  So we ate appropriately - at a Mexican restaurant.

The research I have to do just before we can choose a restaurant! (OK, OK - so there were about 9 Mexican restaurants and the other one was a MacDonald's!)

Less than 100 yards up the road from the Whaley House was a cemetery straight from a Stephen King novel.
And surely a few tortured souls were there?

This is the guy that was hung in the 'Courtroom' that Fergus was pictured in above.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at this epitaph.

Still no ghosts though.

This was at the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park.

Colorado House was opened as a hotel in 1850.  Fergus looks wrecked - I guess the early start and hectic schedule are getting to him.  Maybe he could just get a room and stay put?

La Casa de Estudillo - built in 1829 - unfortunately Captain Estudillo died within a year of building it.  Lovely house too.
We found a little leather shop here which sold a hat fit (or should I say huge enough) for the Wilson head!!!

Our long search was over.

A shot of San Diego New Town.

On to Day Two.
